WHAT IS POLYCARBOXYLATE ETHER SUPERPLASTICIZER?

Polycarboxylate Ether Superplasticizer is the new generation admixture.

With a relatively low dosage (0.15-0.3% by cement weight),

It allow a water reduction up to 40%,

This happens because of its chemical structure  which enables good particle dispersion.

WHAT IS THE CHEMICAL STRUCTURE OF POLYCARBOXYLATE ETHER SUPERPLASTICIZER?

It is composed of methoxy polyethylene glycol copolymer as a side chain,

attached with methacrylic acid copolymer which is the main chain.

In water, the carboxylate group dissociates,

and provides a negative charge along with PCE backbone.

There is non-uniform distribution of electron cloud afforded by polyethylene oxide group,

which provides chemical polarity to the side chains.

The number and also the length of side chains are flexible parameters, which can be easily change.

When there is huge amount of EO units present in the side chains,

they lower the charge density of the polymer, which has the high molar mass,

this enables the poor performances on the cement suspensions.

At the same time, you can check both the parameters,

i.e, long side chain and high charge density,

the number of main chain units can be much higher than the number of side chain units.

WHAT IS THE WORKING MECHANISMS OF POLYCARBOXYLATE ETHER?

The negative charge, which the backbone of the PCE,

allows the accumulation of the colloidal particles which has the positive charge.

As a result of the accumulation, there is a change in the zeta potential of the suspended particles,

due to the accumulation of the COO- groups on the colloidal surface.

The polymer displacement on the surface of the particle ensures the side chains the possibility to exert the repulsive force,

which spread the particles of the suspension and to avoid friction.

By the use of atomic force microscopy, we can directly detect these forces,

working in liquid environment with model substances.
